Pocket Reduction Surgery
Pocket reduction surgery, which includes procedures like gingivectomy, osseous surgery, and flap surgery, is performed to access the roots of your teeth. This allows us to effectively remove harmful bacteria and tartar buildup, helping to restore gum health and prevent further progression of gum disease. The human mouth contains dozens of different bacteria at any given time. The bacteria found in plaque (the sticky substance on teeth) produce acids that lead to demineralization of the tooth surface, ultimately contributing to periodontal disease.
Periodontal infections cause a chronic inflammatory response in the body that destroys bone and gum tissues once they invade the subgingival area (below the gum line). As the tissue continues to be destroyed, gum pockets develop and get deeper between the gums and teeth. Periodontal disease is a progressive oral health condition that can lead to heavy bacterial buildup in the gum pockets if not treated in time. This ongoing infection can eventually weaken the supporting structures of the teeth, increasing the risk of tooth loss. Pocket reduction surgery aims to break this harmful cycle by reducing the depth of pockets where bacteria collect, promoting healthier gums and preventing further damage.
